Products 101

Understanding the "bones" of your product is the first step to making informed sustainable furniture selections.

Don't be afraid to ask the manufacturer questions...What type of wood is the frame made of? Are the springs made of recycled metal? What type of foam do you use for your cushions? Questions like these will allow you to fully understand your product. It also may give you the opportunity to ask the manufacturer to modify their materials to reduce the overall environmental impact of your product. Ask for a natural latex if their standard is synthetic, change the wood frame to FSC certified wood, specify your own organic cotton fabric! We as designers and consumers are setting the bench mark for what we expect in our products. If we all ask the right questions and demand healthier materials, together, we can make the market shift.

In addition to asking questions, it is really important to understand the key terms and certifications associated with sustainable design.
